The restoration of the Porch of Glory, the finishing touch of the pilgrimage to Compostela
The works of restoration of the Portico de la Gloria finished last week after a decade and more than 50,000 hours of work invested. The masterpiece of Mestre Mateo has been officially inaugurated this Monday in an act that has brought together the highest authorities of different sectors of society such as Queen Sofía, Culture Minister José Guirao, the President of the Xunta de Galicia Alberto Núñez Feijoo or Archbishop Julián Barrio.
The Portico de la Gloria was, when restoration work began by a team of 12 experts, very deteriorated. The water leaks and the degradation as well as the dust deteriorated their appearance enormously until in 2009 work began to recover all its splendor. The research and techniques used for the works in the Pórtico have been pioneering, and it is expected that, if properly cared for, the restoration can last hundreds of years.
The visits to the Portico will not wait. From next July 27, the Portico will be already visitable, although with the objective of preserving the work, will be in small groups. A maximum of 25 people will be able to access each visit during a time that cannot exceed 15 minutes. The visits begin at 8:00 and will be uninterrupted until 10 pm and will be free of charge, in strict order of arrival.
The monument that the Galician poet Rosalía de Castro loved so much recovers its splendor after a restoration that has cost more than 6 million euros and that will soon be able to be contemplated by all the pilgrims arriving in Compostela. A luxury that serves to put the finishing touch to the experience of the Camino.
