Crossing Spain on a historic path
The antiquity of this road goes back to the time of the Roman Empire, since it runs on a Roman road called the Vía de la Plata, which connects Mérida and Astorga. For the pilgrimage, this route is the main path to which the southern roads join to finally coincide with the French Way from Astorga. And like other commercial routes, the path is at the origin of important cities such as Cáceres, Badajoz, Zamora, or Mérida, which you can visit during your pilgrimage to Santiago.
Discover treasures of the Roman Empire
If you are passionate about archeology and ancient civilizations, the Silver Way offers you the possibility to visit different sites, ruins and Roman buildings. A highly recommended visit is the ancient city of Mérida (Extremadura), named a World Heritage City by Unesco for the number of preserved Roman buildings such as the amphitheater, the theater or the Roman circus. On your route you will also find the Roman Baths of Montemayor, the Aqueduct of Plasencia, the archeological site of Munigua and the ruins of Italica. A whole museum spread across the national geography!
Visit the natural gems of geography
For those who prefer to enjoy the wonderful landscapes and natural backwaters that the road offers, the Silver Way is also an ideal option. Spain has many natural parks in which to observe the original living beeings; Some of them are Sanabria Lake, Monfragüe Lake, Cornalvo Lake and Sierra del Norte in Seville, which you will cross at the beginning of your pilgrimage to Santiago. The national hydrography is also abundant and full of reservoirs. If you embark on the silver route you will have the opportunity to cross the Alcántara reservoir and enjoy wonderful views over the Tajo river basin.
